Design diving habitat for gas pipeline repair in the Java Sea

Design diving habitat for gas pipeline repair in the Java Sea

Project Description

Repairing a damaged gas pipeline on the seafloor is a pretty challenging task. Especially when the pipeline remains operational during this procedure.
The Indonesion state-owned company Perushaan Gas Negara (PGN) has granted DCN International Diving and Marine Contractors from Bergen op Zoom, The Netherlands, the task of repairing this gas pipeline (see the video included).
The repair procedure had to be executed under water in dry conditions. Therefore a special diving habitat was needed to let divers repair the pipe in dry and safe working conditions.

Project Activities

- Developing an underwater positioning system for the diving habitat. The habitat is designed with retractable hydraulic legs that are adjustable in all directions. This complex design was necessary to position the habitat over the pipeline and lower it without transferring any forces onto the pipe.
- Design of suction piles to provide a safe foundation for the habitat.
- Establishing design conditions for waves and currents.
