For the international MOSE Project in Venice, MH Poly and Tenwolde Transport and Repair B.V. (TTR) developed two heavy-duty hydraulic winches for demanding marine operations. These multifunctional anchor and mooring winches were engineered to deliver maximum reliability, high pulling capacity, and versatile deployment on vessels, pontoons, and land-based projects.

Hydraulic Anchor and Mooring Winches for Heavy Marine Applications

Reliable winches are essential for complex offshore and hydraulic engineering projects. For the world-renowned MOSE Project—the storm surge barrier system that protects Venice from flooding—two hydraulic winches were designed to operate under the most demanding conditions.

The winches were used as anchor winches on a sinking pontoon during the construction of the storm surge barrier. Thanks to their multifunctional design, they can also be used as pulling winches or mooring winches for a wide range of marine and industrial applications.

Engineering and Collaboration

MH Poly was responsible for:

  • Complete mechanical design of both winches
  • Preparation of detailed manufacturing drawings
  • 3D modelling of all components and assemblies
  • Structural strength calculations using the Finite Element Method (FEM)

TTR was responsible for the fabrication, assembly, and installation of the complete winch systems.

By engineering every component individually and integrating them into one complete system, the project resulted in highly reliable hydraulic winch installations capable of operating in demanding offshore environments.

  • Steel wire rope: 565 metres, Ø 32 mm
  • Minimum braking force: 27 tonnes

Large Hydraulic Winch

  • Dimensions: 4,700 × 2,940 × 2,010 mm (L × W × H)
  • Steel wire rope: 1,000 metres, Ø 52 mm
  • Minimum braking force: 1,000 kN
